Some of our favorite Parks

We've visited all of these at one time or another, unless noted otherwise.

Texas State Parks:
Daingerfield Deep in the rolling hills and woods of East Texas - Still our alltime favorite
Davis Mountains Beautiful park in the Davis Mountains. Lodge. Fort in nearby National Historical Site.
Inks Lake Beautiful park, on the chain of lakes on the Colorado River. Golf
Lake Joe Pool - Cedar Hill Just south of town. Rugged unpaved walking trails. Large
Lake Mineral Wells Just West of Fort Worth, out where the mesas and cactus begin
Lake Ray Roberts An hour plus from the house. Nice beach and trails at both units. Horse ranching country.
Lake Texoma - Eisenhower Park An hour from home. Big lake, great scenery.
Lost Maples Isolated stand of Uvalde Bigtooth Maples West of San Antonio has fantastic color in the fall. Great hiking in the canyons. Remote.
Lyndon B. Johnson State Park Combined with a National Park at the ranch site near Austin. The bus tour of the ranch is worth the money!
Palo Duro Canyon Just out of Amarillo. Quite a site
Perdernales Falls Nice hill country park near LBJ ranch, Austin
Texas State Railroad Ride the train from Rusk to Palestine - No longer a State Park!
Tyler Also in the woods of East Texas - smaller than Daingerfield

National Parks, Historical sites, Other parks, etc
Arches NP Largest collection of "natural bridge" arches I've ever seen.
Banff NP Canada Beautiful and a bargain. We enjoyed a 1999 vacation here!

Big Bend NP Unique desert park in the "big bend" of the Rio Grande in southwest Texas. Love it.
Carlsbad Caverns NP Great cave I thought!
Fort Davis NHS Very good reconstruction of a Texas Frontier fort. Close to State park.
Fort Point NHS At the base of the Golden Gate Bridge this has to be one of the greatest views I've seen.
Glacier NP A beautiful mountain park in northwestern Montana. Also check out Waterton which borders it on the North.
Grand Canyon NP So big it doesn't look real! A must see for everyone.
Grand Teton NP Beautiful place near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We preferred it to Yellowstone.
Great Smokey Mountains NP In the beautiful Appalachian mountains on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina.
Guadalupe Mountains NP Great hiking trails and scenery. We were there when it first opened. Hope to get back
Hot Springs NP Both the downtown section preserving the baths, and the camp ground are nice places to visit.
Jasper NP Canada Site of some of the greatest mountain scenery I've ever seen! We enjoyed a 1999 vacation here!
Kananaskis Country Canada Beautiful mountain valley south of Canmore and Banff, just west of Calgary.
Kootenay NP Canada Western entrance to Banff and Jasper National Parks. The drive through the canyon is beautiful.
Little Bighorn Battlefield NM Site of Custer's Last Stand where the Indians won one. Interesting.

Lyndon B. Johnson NHP Be sure and take the tour of the ranch which leaves from the co-located state park.
Mesa Verde NP Very interesting site of cliff dwellers in South Western Colorado.
Mount Rushmore NM Site of the mountain carvings of the presidents. One of the best visitor centers I've seen in the US Parks.
Muir Woods NM Virgin redwoodest. One of the most beautifull natural places I've ever seen. God must live here!
Rocky Mountain NP What a place to cross the great divide! Beautiful.
San Antonio Missions NHP When you're in San Antonio plan on spending an afternoon touring the missions.
San Juan NHS Site of El Morro and San Cristóbal forts in Old San Juan Puerto Rico.
Shiloh NMP Site of a bloody battle during the war between the states. Haven't visited it since I was a kid.
Tierra del Fuego NP Argentina Located at "the end of the world" just outside Usauaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world. Unique to say the least.
Virgin Island NP Covers half of St John Island. Diverse, hilly, and some of the prettiest beaches you can imagine.
Walnut Canyon NM Another cliff dwelling site with some very interesting exhibits and ruins.
Waterton Lakes NP Canadian Park adjoining US Glacier NP. Unfortunately we didn't get there in '99, but maybe next time.
White Sands NM Brilliant white gypsum sand dunes as far as the eye can see.
Yellowstone NP A big and strange place! Takes at least 4 days to see just the attractions reachable by car.
Yoho NP Canada Adjacent to Banff and Jasper National Parks. Home of Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge, and Kicking Horse pass.

Yosemite NP Famous California park. We spent a couple of days there on our 2000 vacation.
